While we're not sure whether to call the bohemian style a trend, aesthetic or lifestyle, it's certainly made an impact on wedding style for the past few years! This laid back style has an indescribable mix of nuances with inspiration in organic elements, minimalism, rustic style, effortlessly cool, 70s, vintage, even a tad of Victorian romanticism thrown in. Even with so many influences, the bohemian look is one that you know it when you see it!
Boho Wedding Guest Dress Code
If you've been invited to a boho wedding, you may be wondering what to wear to get this laid back style to be wedding-ready. After all, a wedding is usually a dressed-up affair. So, how does one combine the special occasion style usually needed for a wedding, with this free-spirited style?
Fortunately, so many retailers and brands are nailing this look of boho chic, making it easy to get the right look for semi-formal boho-inspired events like weddings and parties.
Here's our take on what to wear, separated by gender just because that's how stores do it but feel free to obviously adjust these recommendations for our own personal style.
Female Boho Wedding Guest Style
For women, the wedding guest boho look could take a few forms. We love long maxi dresses in a gorgeous color like the one above, or a floral print, or with a great detail like a ruffled hem, blouson sleeves, tie waist or straps, or a sleeveless halter style. There's a whole range of options from long skirts, mini or midi dresses, jumpsuits, pants and suits that would look quite appropriate in a boho event. Just select any items that suits you, making sure it has a bit of special occasion feel, fits the season and formality of the event, and perhaps mixes in a boho element, print, or fabric.
For instance, a floral printed mini skirt with long sleeves, a long skirt with a special occasion top, or a beautiful suit in a great color could all work! Since boho weddings are often outdoors and in sunny locales don't forget a pair of sunglasses, a cover-up in case it gets colder, and possibly some shoes that can deal with terrain (We presently love wedges or block heels).
Male Boho Wedding Guest Style
For men, a casual suit in tan, blue, gray, brown or light color in chambray or linen can be a great look for a boho wedding. For colder months, a tweed or wool suit with a bit of a pattern or color could be a great choice. A suit and shirt without a tie can also be a great look if you know it's a non-formal event. We think ASOS suits are particularly adept at getting the look down. For instance, this gray skinny suit has the look, as does this navy suit.
A vest, shirt sleeves, with pants that match the vest can be another look. A suit big in personality, like this velvet look can also be a great option! The main thing is that this is a free-spirited look, and most likely a free-spirited wedding so let your own style guide you with how you'd like to best express your personality while keeping the look in the realm of wedding attire (i.e. no jeans probably!)
Boho Casual or Boho Black Tie?
Just like any other wedding style, there are sure to be some variations in the formality of boho weddings. In general, a morning, afternoon, or outdoor wedding in a back yard or small venue is likely to be more casual. However, a boho-chic wedding can also still be black-tie formal. For instance, if the wedding takes in the evening and in a formal venue like a five-star hotel, or upscale resort or historic property it may still be black-tie attire that has boho style elements.
