This weekend marked the first official day of fall, so we thought it was high time to update this post with new dresses and looks for the fall 2019 wedding season. This blog is written from the Mid-Atlantic section of the United States, so our posts tend to follow the seasons we're experiencing here during the fall season of September, October, and November. Your fall climate might be different!
Fall Weddings Mean Subtle Attire Changes
Just because cooler, shorter days are here, it doesn't mean the weddings and receptions are slowing. Fall is nearly as busy as the late spring and summer for the wedding season! Fall fashion usually beckons us to wear darker colors and jewel tones, but as this crop of dresses will show you, it doesn't mean that you need to be drab. There are plenty of cheerful and dynamic color choices that suit for autumn wedding attire.
Fall Wedding Dress Codes
In general, our standard advice for wedding dress codes still stands for fall weddings. You'll just want to add fall fabrics and some of the colors we've mentioned above and you'll be well-dressed and wedding appropriate! We created the visual guide above, and have included some additional advice below. You might also want to add a wrap to wear as a wedding guest in case the temperatures fluctuate where you are.
Casual Fall Wedding Attire Guidelines
Casual daytime weddings call for more informal styles. For women, nice day or day-to-night dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, or separates like pants and a nice top, are the perfect things to choose from. Just be sure in styles that the styles aren't too casual - just think something nice that is slightly is more elevated than your everyday work style. Men might wear a suit in a casual fabric, a blazer with dress pants, or -- in some cases -- a suit without a tie. Some very casual weddings don't even require men to wear a tie or jacket; just a shirt and dress pants for very casual events. Check out this post if you need more ideas for what to wear to a casual fall wedding, or visit our section of casual wedding guest dresses to shop.
Semi-Formal Fall Wedding Attire Guidelines
If the invitation requests semi-formal attire or the wedding is held in the late afternoon with a reception starting in the early evening wedding are semi-formal attire is a safe bet! We find most weddings, are in this category. This means women should wear a dressy cocktail dress or a jumpsuit or pants and top in a special occasion fabric. Bring out some nice accessories and generally dress up. Men should wear a dark suit, with a shirt and tie and dress shoes. You can see more detail in this post about what to wear to a semi-formal fall wedding.
Formal or Black Tie Fall Wedding Attire Guidelines
If formal or black-tie attire has been requested, then women should wear a formal evening gown, dress, suit, jumpsuit, or formal separates (i.e. a top, skirts or pants in a special occasion fabric).
For men, formal attire is one level slight below black tie, which means a tuxedo might not be required, but a dark formal suit and tie is (and you may want to check the wedding website or speak to other people about what they are wearing, to be sure you won't be the only one not wearing a tuxedo!)
Black tie means a tuxedo suit and literal black tie is the look to choose! You can read more about wedding attire guidelines here, or read this post to find more formal wedding attire ideas.
